Concepts and Approaches for the Bioassessment of Non-wadeable Streams and Rivers - Chapter 8

چکیده
Assessment data are collected not only to help define the status of large rivers, but also to guide management decisions. Data must be translated into a format from which management decisions regarding water resources can be made. The strategies outlined in Chapters 2 and 3 on the elements of assessment and study design, provide users with approaches to clearly define questions and objectives to create an appropriate study design. These chapters also provide approaches for developing a thorough quality assurance plan (QAP) that will allow the study to meet and quantify measurement and data quality objectives (MQOs and DQOs). The tools introduced in those chapters lead to this section which outlines some common approaches for analyzing assessment data and presenting it in a way that is most useful for decision-making. • is critical in translating monitoring data into information for management action Data Analysis... Habitat assessment of non-wadeable rivers in Michigan.
Habitat evaluation of wadeable streams based on accepted protocols provides a rapid and widely used adjunct to biological assessment. However, little effort has been devoted to habitat evaluation in non-wadeable rivers, where it is likely that protocols will differ and field logistics will be more challenging. We developed and tested a non-wadeable habitat index (NWHI) for rivers of Michigan, w...
متن کاملEvaluation of an alternate method for sampling benthic macroinvertebrates in low-gradient streams sampled as part of the National Rivers and Streams Assessment
Benthic macroinvertebrates are sampled in streams and rivers as one of the assessment elements of the US Environmental Protection Agency's National Rivers and Streams Assessment. In a 2006 report, the recommendation was made that different yet comparable methods be evaluated for different types of streams (e.g., low gradient vs. high gradient). Consequently, a research element was added to the ...
متن کاملWeak Concordance between Fish and Macroinvertebrates in Mediterranean Streams
Although anthropogenic degradation of riverine systems stimulated a multi-taxon bioassessment of their ecological integrity in EU countries, specific responses of different taxonomic groups to human pressure are poorly investigated in Mediterranean rivers. Here, we assess if richness and composition of macroinvertebrate and fish assemblages show concordant variation along a gradient of anthropo...
متن کاملApplication of Rapid Bioassessment Protocols (RBP) for benthic macroinvertebrates in Brazil: comparison between sampling techniques and mesh sizes.
This study is part of the effort to test and to establish Rapid Bioassessment Protocols (RBP) using benthic macroinvertebrates as indicators of the water quality of wadeable streams in south-east Brazil. We compared the cost-effectiveness of sampling devices frequently used in RBPs, Surber and Kick-net samplers, and of three mesh sizes (125, 250 and 500 microm). A total of 126,815 benthic macro...
